Day Hab vs. Hourly Services: Which Is Right for You or Your Loved One?
Understanding Your Options for Disability Support in Iowa
At AmeriServe, we offer a range of services tailored to the unique needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Two of our popular programs—Day Habilitation (Day Hab) and 15-minute Supported Community Living (Hourly)—offer distinct benefits depending on the level of independence, support needs, and desired lifestyle of the individual. If you’re a guardian, case manager, or individual trying to determine the best fit, here’s what you need to know.
What Is Day Habilitation?
Day Hab at AmeriServe is a structured, community-based program designed to help individuals build social skills, friendships, and a strong community presence. Offered Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM, Day Hab gives individuals the option to attend full-time or part-time, depending on their preferences and needs.
Our program includes:
-
Daily community outings for highly active individuals
-
On-site activities like crafts, games, and group sessions for those who prefer a slower pace
-
Volunteer opportunities that create a sense of purpose and contribution
-
1:5 staff-to-client ratios to promote learning, engagement, and safety
Whether it’s visiting the Omaha Zoo, participating in Meals on Wheels, or simply enjoying board games with peers, AmeriServe Day Hab is centered around connection, exploration, and meaningful activity.
What Is Hourly (Less Than 24-Hour) Support?
Hourly services, also called 15-minute Supported Community Living, provide support on a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. This program is often ideal for more independent individuals who need support with everyday tasks while maintaining autonomy.
Hourly support can include:
-
Budgeting and money management
-
Meal prep and healthy living support
-
Medication assistance and appointment transportation
-
Help organizing social outings, volunteer work, or recreational activities
Most Hourly clients live with family or roommates in their own apartments, and the service is designed to fit around their lifestyle, offering support exactly when it’s needed.
Can Someone Use Both Services? Absolutely.
Many AmeriServe clients choose to participate in both Day Hab and Hourly services—a great combination for those who want both structured daytime engagement and support for independent living in the evenings or weekends.
This option is especially valuable for individuals who are not currently employed but still want to maintain an active schedule, build confidence, and develop community ties.
Which Program Is Right for You or Your Loved One?
If you’re trying to decide between these two options, consider:
-
Where the individual lives (with family, independently, or in residential care)
-
What time of day support is needed
-
Whether the focus is on community presence and social growth or daily living assistance
-
The individual’s level of independence and goals for the future
While Hourly services tend to be a better fit for higher-functioning individuals seeking to live independently, Day Hab is inclusive of all support levels and offers both hands-on assistance and personalized, interest-based support.
Still Not Sure? We’re Here to Help.
