How AmeriServe Trains Staff to Support Adults with Disabilities

Empowering our team through education, coaching, and a culture of care

alternatisf At AmeriServe, we believe that delivering exceptional disability services starts with exceptional training. That’s why we invest in robust onboarding, ongoing education, and a company-wide culture of support to ensure every team member has the knowledge and tools they need to help clients thrive. Whether working in Day Hab, 24-hour residential, or hourly support, our staff are trained to provide care that is not only safe and compliant—but empowering, person-centered, and joyful.

Strong Foundations: New Hire Training at AmeriServe

Every new team member begins their journey with a comprehensive onboarding process that includes classroom-style education and hands-on learning.

Our New Employee Certification (NEC) program covers:

  • Documentation standards and HCBS regulations

  • Behavior support strategies

  • Client rights and confidentiality

  • Medication management and safety procedures

  • Mandatory reporter training

In addition to these classroom sessions, every new hire completes 80 hours of hands-on shadowing, learning directly from experienced team members before working independently.

Ongoing Training That Builds Confidence and Connection

Learning doesn’t stop after onboarding. All team members participate in required annual training, which includes:

  • Documentation and progress note review

  • Confidentiality and rights restrictions

  • Bloodborne pathogen safety

  • Hazardous communication standards

  • Behavior support alternatives

These trainings ensure that our staff remain compliant with Iowa regulations while keeping best practices top of mind.

To take things further, we also provide certified Mandt training, CPR certification, and monthly continuing education sessions, which are paid opportunities designed to keep staff growing and engaged.

Internal Training That Reflects AmeriServe Culture

In addition to formal certifications, AmeriServe has developed custom internal training programs that reflect our values of positivity, empowerment, and meaningful support:

  • ASI Way – An 8-week course that teaches company knowledge, industry standards, personal goal-setting, and our core values and culture of positivity.

  • Coaching – A 6-week course based on our “cheerleading” model of support, focused on using praise and encouragement to build trust, motivation, and self-esteem in the individuals we serve.

These programs are designed to foster personal growth, build leadership skills, and strengthen the relationships between staff and clients.

Coaching, Communication, and Team Collaboration

We know that great training only matters if it’s supported in the field. That’s why every team member at AmeriServe receives regular guidance from their supervisor, attends monthly team meetings, and has access to coaching and support as they grow in their role.

This team-based approach ensures that our services remain consistent, responsive, and aligned with each client’s needs and goals.

Quality Training = Quality Care

AmeriServe’s investment in employee training helps us deliver safe, consistent, and high-quality services across all three of our program areas:

  • 24-hour residential services

  • Less than 24-hour hourly supports

  • Day Hab and community integration programs

By promoting a culture of ongoing learning, positivity, and client-centered care, we ensure that our team members are confident, capable, and proud of the work they do.
