Supporting Mental Health for Adults with Disabilities in Iowa
Supporting emotional well-being is just as important as meeting daily needs. At AmeriServe, we make mental health a core part of our disability services across Iowa.
October 10 is World Mental Health Day, a time to highlight the importance of well-being for people everywhere. At AmeriServe International, we know mental health is essential for building independence and improving quality of life for adults with disabilities. That’s why we make mental health support a priority across all our programs in Council Bluffs, Clarinda, Shenandoah, and beyond.
Why Mental Health Support Matters for Adults with Disabilities
Adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities often face challenges that can impact emotional well-being—such as social isolation, communication barriers, or limited access to community resources. By pairing mental health support with daily services like DayHab programs, residential care, and hourly support, we create an environment where individuals feel respected, valued, and ready to thrive.
AmeriServe’s Approach to Mental Health Support
At AmeriServe, our team integrates mental health strategies into everyday care. Here are a few ways we support emotional wellness for clients across Iowa:
-
Consistent Routines: Predictable schedules reduce stress and create a sense of security in both 24-hour residential services and less than 24-hour residential programs.
-
Community Participation: Activities like volunteering, attending events, or exploring local attractions help clients form connections and avoid social isolation.
-
Staff Training: Our employees receive ongoing training, including programs like Coaching 1 and ASI Way, to better recognize signs of stress, respond with empathy, and encourage healthy coping.
-
Collaboration with Professionals: When needed, we work with outside mental health providers to ensure individuals have access to comprehensive care and resources through the Iowa HCBS SCL waiver services.
Connecting Mental Health to AmeriServe Values
Mental health support is part of how we live our values every day:
-
Respect: Treating every individual with dignity and understanding.
-
Presence: Being fully engaged and creating meaningful moments.
-
Participation: Encouraging involvement in both community and in-house activities.
-
Choice: Empowering individuals to make decisions that promote confidence and independence.
These values guide us in creating a supportive environment where mental health and independence go hand in hand.
World Mental Health Day: A Local and Global Commitment
While World Mental Health Day is recognized worldwide, at AmeriServe we bring that commitment home to Iowa every day. Supporting mental health is not just part of a global conversation—it’s part of our mission. By focusing on well-being, we help clients gain confidence, build independence, and form strong connections with their communities.
